Mr Motsaathebe Serekoane
Area of expertise: Anthropology, transformative education, community engagement, heritage, culture and health
Faculty/Department: Humanities, Department of Anthropology

I am an anthropologist, currently Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology at the University of the Free State. As a social scientist, I am naturally troubled by social suffering. My academic interests are focused on issues pertaining to heritage, culture and health, and the scholarship that informs transformative education. I see my work as interdisciplinary, since the movement of my thought cuts across various disciplinary boundaries such as social work, psychology, sociology, and development studies. I imagine my future contribution to advance the position that understands scholarly practice as context-specific, entwined in the discovery of the knowledge of the discipline (epistemology) and the latest ideas on how to teach it (pedagogy).

In addition, I contribute to debates on discontent (aspirations that far exceeds resources); cultivating human relations competence (cultural intelligence, among others); addressing contemporary issues (heritage and issues of preservation and conservation in a post-conflict society); advocating for educational leadership and activism; facilitating understanding of the taken-for-granted problematics of diversity by challenging the logic of sameness, challenging the logic of difference, and facilitating understanding of the self in relation to the other (interrogating socialisation script).
